Bio

Krista Schlyer is a conservation photographer, researcher and writer, with home-base in Washington DC.

Since obtaining a master’s degree in journalism in 1997 with a focus on photojournalism, Krista has contributed stories and photography to numerous magazines, books and websites, including National Parks, Defenders, High Country News, Ranger Rick, National Geographic News, Audubon, and Outdoor Photographer. Her stories and other publications have focused on wildlife like the desert tortoise, bison, prairie dog, and larger environmental issues including global warming and freshwater shortages. Krista is currently working on a photo book on the wildlife and ecosystems of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands, which will be released in August 2012 by Texas A&M Press.

As a member of both the International League of Conservation Photographers (ILCP) and the North American Nature Photographers Association (NANPA) her work has focused on long-term documentation and communication projects. One such project included the planning and facilitation of a public information campaign related to the ecological impacts of the U.S.-Mexico border wall. The project has included a 17-member expedition with fellow photographers in the ILCP, a blog, exhibit, series of profiles on borderlands residents, website, and multimedia documentary. In addition to several dozen locations the exhibit has visited around the United States, it has been presented to the U.S. House and Senate, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Good Neighbor Environmental Board and to the Natural Resources Committee of the Mexican Congress.

Krista is also currently working on a documentary project on the Anacostia River in Washington D.C., one of the most polluted rivers in the nation. The purpose of this project, similar to the goals of the U.S.-Mexico borderlands project, is to increase awareness of both the resilliance and surprising biodiversity of this ecosystem, and also to highlight the ongoing threats to the watershed and the ability of residents to take an active role in restoration efforts. To achieve this goal, Enviro-pic and partners will be creating a series of public art displays that integrate storm drain art (painted murals designed to incorporate storm drains and river themes) and all-weather outdoor photo prints that also serve as QR code portals for internet sites and river-related games. By bringing inspirational and eyecatching images of the river to public spaces, this campaign endeavors to inspire the public to return to the banks of a much-forgotten river.
